Welcome

The Hawaii Health Information Exchange (Hawaii HIE) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit established in 2006 by leading healthcare stakeholders in Hawaii for the purpose of improving healthcare delivery throughout the State through seamless, effective, and safe health information exchange.  In September of 2009, Hawaii HIE was designated by the State to develop and implement a statewide health information exchange that will ultimately feed into the national health information network.  HHIE has a strong and representative composition of Board stakeholders who are determined to transform the current state of health care in Hawaii into one that coordinates care, reduces costs (for patients and providers), addresses the needs of the aging population, and provides incentives to patients to take a more proactive approach to their healthcare.  The opportunities afforded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 will help Hawaii to expedite its long-term HIE goals in less than five years.Within the next 6 months, HHIE will facilitate the development of a statewide health information exchange plan to include:

The Hawaii HIE has set up working committees to include Finance, Governance, Data Access & Management, Technical Infrastructure & Standards, and Legal/Policy.  Establishing interdependencies among these key pillars of an HIE will ensure that a sustainable plan is developed and implemented in the best interests of Hawaii.

Vision
Public health and healthcare in the State of Hawaii has been positively transformed by the exchange of critical health care information throughout the system of care and can be easily accessed, as appropriate, by all interested parties, including consumers and providers, with total confidence in the security and validity of the information.

Mission
Hawaii Health Information Exchange facilitates the exchange of health information that enables quality health care statewide.

Core Values & Guiding Principles

Inclusive
HHIE is committed to broad stakeholder engagement (statewide, urban/rural, large/small, consumers/providers/organizations) in shaping its services, establishes policies and procedures that assure fair representation and participation in decision-making, programs and services, and actively seeks to reduce barriers to improve the delivery of care for all stakeholders.

Quality
HHIE is committed to creating an open and respectful data sharing environment.  Data integrity is the cornerstone that assures quality provider information and patient care, therefore HHIE will establish and maintain the highest quality control procedures and standardized metrics while still assuring easy access and functionality for users.

Transparency
HHIE maintains clear, open and constant two-way communications with its stakeholders, the public-at-large, and within HHIE itself.

Privacy
HHIE ensures consumers’ privacy at all times by maintaining security on its products, engaging in regular system audits, and meeting all state and federal standards on privacy.

Sustainability
HHIE own sustainability will be a direct result of providing quality services for its stakeholders, creating an outstanding value proposition, and investing in infrastructure that is flexible and useable for a long period of time.
